First off, kudos to Sen. Barack Obama for picking up the necessary numbers of both delegates and super-delegates last night to become the presumptive Democratic Presidential Nominee.
The fun part of the campaign is now over, we have our candidate...the real work now begins.
In this regard, he is assuredly most deserving of all of our prayers and support this election cycle...once again, kudos Senator Obama.
You are probably asking yourself "why start out with a convoluted opening such as this?" Well, forgive me but after sixteen months of a primary season where we have seen...
1.) Mitt Romney's political star fall faster than "Speed Racer" did at the box office...
2.) Hillary Clinton's almost-assured Presidential nomination blown away like so much baby powder...
3.) John McCain's nearly-dead presidential campaign becoming a political steamroller/juggernaut/Hoveround after the NH primary...
4.) The apparent importance of seven or so votes in Guam's Democratic primary...
5.) Rudy Giuliani's "Only Florida" primary strategy going "poof!"...
6.) An odd/controversial white pastor (Rev. John Hagee) and a seemingly unorthodox/controversial black pastor (Rev. Jeremiah Wright) make life difficult for their presidential picks...
7.) The harsh reality that fmr. President Bill Clinton really does have a temper and is unafraid to show it or tell it to anyone within camera or microphone range...
8.) The increasingly-scary political viability of Mike Huckabee...
9.) Gov. Bill Richardson's seeming "betrayal" of the Clinton's by supporting Obama...
10.) A soulful fist pound from Barack and Michelle Obama...
11.) The existence of "super-delegates," delegates with powers far beyond those of mortal delegates.
12.) The New York Football Giants winning the Super Bowl...DEAL WITH IT, PATRIOTS FANS! (OK, this last wasn't politically important but I just had to sneak it into some blog entry somewhere.)
...you'll just have to forgive me if I am just a little bit tired from all of it. To tell you the truth, I watched CNN and MSNBC election coverage so much in the last eight months that I now consider Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, Wolf Blitzer, and Jack Cafferty old high school buddies. Yep, we'd go after the returns were tabulated and head over to the IHOP for strawberry-banana pancakes, discuss Hillary's choice of jump/pantsuit, and place bets as to how many walnuts one could place in John McCain's neck waddle.
For a political junkie such as myself, this election cycle has been, for the most part, everything I'd hoped it would be. Two actual viable candidates emerged on the Democratic side in Clinton and Obama and a return to actual politics on the Republican side. By that, I mean a return to the old-folks home...to pick up John McCain from Bingo (provided if he's having a "good day.")
Yet, I must say that I could certainly use a break from all of this for a while. I feel like saying goodbye to Keith, Chris, Jack, and ol' Wolfie, turning off my TV, leaving a wake-up call for the last week in August, getting into bed, pulling the covers over my head, and just sleep the hell out of myself. Unfortunately, that will probably not come to pass, especially for me. A coma-like sleep on my part does not put my candidate in the White House or even on the ballot. So, I will hold my head high this year and work for him, despite my tiredness...for my party actually has a candidate worth a damn in Sen. Barack Obama, a man who is worthy of the name "Mr. President."
Whatever I have felt in the past or whatever I have said in those murky days of...well...a month ago, about Barack Obama is just that...the past. It has no bearing on my support for him now nor will it ever really. If anything, this election has taught me that while experience is important to have in a presidential candidate...it isn't everything. However, I will say that Barack should keep Hillary in mind as a VP choice. Despite what any of my college colleagues say about idealism, youthfulness, hope, and change; pure mathematics cannot lie and is undeniable. More people voted for Hillary than Barack for a variety of reasons, especially in big states and rural America. Of course, he could go with somebody else, that's his choice...a choice which may prove heartbreaking come November.
...with that being said, I am going to turn over and hit the snooze button on this blog (click;) I need ten more minutes.
I apologize for being absent for the last two-plus weeks; I had a personal matter to attend to that prevented me from writing anything. Also, I like comments from all sorts, it tell me how good or bad I'm doing in this blog. After you read this, please comment. I'd truly appreciate it.
Thanks~NelsOnline.
